Somali president takes oath in Nairobi
Somalia, Politics, 10/15/2004

Designated Somali President Abdullah Youssef in Nairobi yesterday took the constitutional oath to assume the mission of restoring stability to Somalia, after one decade of the absence of the central government. He called on the international community to send peace keeping forces to his country.

The celebration which was held in the Kenyan capital was attended by African leaders including the President of Nigeria, the Presidents of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda and the vice president of South Africa. Youssef (62 year old) took his constitutional oath in the Somali language amid applause of the audience who waved their country's flag. The celebration was held at a sport stadium in Nairobi where Youssef was elected last Sunday by a temporary parliament composed of 275 members held in Kenya because of security dangers in Somalia.

Youssef called on the international community to send peace keeping force to his country to help in restoring back the regime and train the Somali security forces. A spokesman said following the taking oath ceremony "International forces are needed to take part in establishing peace in the country and train the security department in the country. This is necessary."
