Rumsfeld concludes visit to Iraq; promoting the election
Iraq-USA, Politics, 10/11/2004

The US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld left Iraq yesterday following a short visit in which he had met in Baghdad with the prime minister of the Interim Iraqi government Eyad Allawi and several government members, and discussed with them matters relating to security and elections due to be held in January 2005.

He also discussed with Iraqi military leaders in Karkouk carrying out security operations to exterminate gunmen in this city before the making of the elections.

In a related matter, the committee in charge of organizing elections in Iraq said it had started a campaign to urge the voters to cast their votes despite the deteriorated security conditions in the country.

The spokesman for the election committee, Fred Ayar, said that one TV film and advertisement and more than half a million of banners and 10 million booklets were issued and will be distributed by schools, noting that the registration of the political parties will be in November and the basic rules of registration were actually sent to these parties.

The Iraqis will elect a national assembly ( parliament) composed of 275 members with the mission of drawing a new draft constitution.
