Arab Journalists Union supports Morocco's territorial integrity
Regional-Morocco, Politics, 10/7/2004

The Arab Journalists Union (AJU) has voiced support to Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces known as Sahara, at its tenth conference that convened in Cairo Tuesday.

The Algeria-backed separatist movement "Polisario" is disputing Morocco over the future of the former Spanish colony, retrieved by the Kingdom in 1975 under the Madrid Accords signed with Spain and Mauritania.

In a statement issued following the 4-day meeting, attended by 19 countries, AJU expressed "support to Morocco's territorial integrity," and called on Spain to put an end to its occupation of the Moroccan Northern cities of Sebta and Melillia, as well as its Mediterranean islands.

The conference also approved a proposal by the Moroccan journalists union (SNPM) to create an observatory of press freedom in the Arab states, to be based in Morocco.
