Straw visits the Kurdish areas before his visit to Baghdad
Iraq-UK, Politics, 10/7/2004

In a remarkable gesture, the British foreign office secretary Jack Straw started his visit to Iraq on Tuesday from the Kurdish areas before visiting the capital Baghdad. He was accompanied by the former British ambassador in Iraq and the consul in Karkouk and also the director of the political education in the British foreign office.

Straw visited Irbil where he was welcomed there by the chairman of the local government there Nijervan al-Barazani, and this was followed by a tour on areas under the control of the Kurdistani National Federation where he was welcomed by Jalal al-Talibani. Straw also met later with the Kurdish leaders in Karkouk, to be the first visit at this high level to this region.

After his meeting with Barazani in Irbil, Straw held a press conference started with Barazani's thanks to Britain over the protection given to the Kurdish areas with the American forces. He said there are two reasons for the progress of the Kurdish areas: security and the people's support to you. These two elements should be provided in all parts of Iraq so as it will witness the same progress already established in Kurdistan."
