Political leader: Algerian papers' disinformation shows Algiers' panic
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 10/6/2004

The false news alleging Moroccan troops were intercepted in Tindouf, as reported by an Algerian daily, is a significant evidence of the panic felt in Algiers lately, said leader of the Istiqlal party, Abbass El Fassi.

The general staff of the Royal Army Forces (FAR) categorically denied on Monday allegations that a Moroccan army detachment was intercepted near Tindouf (south-western Algeria).

"The Algerian government does not know what to do to stop the mobilization of countries that count on the Security Council for a political solution (of the Sahara issue) that guarantees lasting peace in the region," he said in an interview published Tuesday by the daily in French "Aujourd'hui le Maroc."

The Sahara issue is opposing Morocco to the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists, who claim the secession of Morocco's southern provinces, known as the Sahara. This former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under Madrid accord.

On Algeria's armament race, the Istiqlal's Secretary General said "it is a deplorable escalation that poisons bilateral relations and hampers building the Maghreb Union (mustering Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya), adding that "Morocco remains wise and peaceful."

"We are serene because we know we are rightful. We do not fight to obtain what belongs to others, but to preserve out territorial integrity," he stressed.

For Fassi, "All these announcements of weapons purchases and disinformation are signs of agitation that impress no one."
