Morocco is by no means interested in 'the arms shopping spree that has seized Algeria', media
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 10/6/2004

Morocco is by no means interested in "the arms shopping spree that has seized Algeria," said on Tuesday several Moroccan press outlets protesting the intoxication campaign conducted by Algerian newspapers.

"Aujourd'hui le Maroc" daily criticised the Algerian press that has been relaying each other to do the "dirty work" of building up the tension between Morocco and Algeria, adding this time it is "Le Courrier" daily that has been activated to disseminate disinformation alleging, under the orders of Algerian Brass, that a contingent of the Moroccan army (FAR) was intercepted in Tindouf, South-West of Algeria.

In its editorial, "Aujourd'hui le Maroc" said that according to "Le Courrier" one would think that Morocco and Algeria are on the verge of waging war.

The editorial added that the fallacious report of the Algerian daily reminds of the Amgala syndrome, "a battle during which the FAR trashed the Algerian troops" that has entailed a paranoid obsession among Algerians and triggered an Algerian intoxication campaign to provoke Morocco.

The creation of the false information about Moroccan troops movement close to the frontiers, said the daily, seeks to validate the arms shopping spree that has seized Algeria.

"Rissalat Al-Oumma" daily said the information on an Algerian-Iranian arm deal would mean that Algeria want to "win a solitary arm race in North Africa."

The daily said that observers think "the persistent inability of those holding power in Algeria to overcome the internal economic and security crisis generates "unifying factors" for the rulers... who could attempt to substitute internal failure with diplomatic successes, reinforcement of military capabilities and a quest for a political support to their thesis on the Moroccan Sahara" issue.

"Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb" daily asks in a comment how the Algerian president, who has been behind the division of families and populations in the Moroccan Sahara, could contribute to building the Arab Maghreb.

The claims of the Algerian president about the building of the Arab Maghreb cannot be believed "unless he could impose his phoney State to 30 million Moroccans... keen on completing their territorial integrity," said the daily adding that the true decolonisation issue in Africa is the Moroccan presidios still under Spanish rule "Which is unfortunately ignored by Algerian brothers."

On allegation by Algerian foreign minister that the Sahara issue does not hamper "the harmonisation of Moroccan-Algerian relations," the daily said for all Moroccans the Sahara is an identity issue which cannot be forgotten for if so this means the History of the Moroccan people is not understood and this could be more serious when this is doubled with a proneness that plays down the role of the people and its attachment to its territorial integrity.
