Syria urges the UN Security Council to stop Israel's 'crimes'
Syria-UN, Politics, 10/6/2004

Syria's Permanente Representative to the United Nations, Faisal Al-Miqdad, on Monday night called upon the UN Security Council to hold full responsibilities by taking measures "to halt crimes perpetrated by Israel against the unarmed Palestinians."

In a statement made during the urgent Security Council session to discuss the deteriorated situations in the occupied Arab lands and the continuous Israeli attacks on the Palestinians; the Syrian ambassador said "what Israel has been doing of killing and destruction in the Palestinian territories was but a collective punishment for the Palestinian people who are living under a brutal occupation."

"Until what time will the UN Security Council be unable to condemn the Israeli terror and adopt positions in the interest of justice and equality among peoples far away from double-standards?" Al-Miqdad asked.

He wondered "how could we explain the passivity of the UN Security Council before Israel's disregard and its flagrant challenge of all norms and international charters."

"How long Israel will stay above the law due to the UN Security Council obedience against its daily killing of the Palestinians," the ambassador underlined.

Al-Miqdad noted that "Syria has so many times warned against the Israeli Premier's schemes and his bids to delude the international community" saying that "while he was claiming the adoption of steps to pullout from Gaza Strip, we saw him increasing his forces massing in various parts of the Strip and mounting settlements in the West Bank as he was carrying on the building of the racist wall of separation to challenge the International Court of Justice."

The Ambassador warned against "the perception of Israel's withdrawal from Gaza saying it would make Israel ask for measures and expensive price for this pullout that might in fact constitute a cluster of violations aimed at nullifying the international law."

"This will lead to nullify the UN Security Council resolutions and make the pullout of Gaza as a pretext by which Israel will dare to kill many of the Gaza citizens and deprive them from sovereignty over their water, space, and ties with neighbors," he said.
