After the US veto, Palestinians to bring the Israeli acts to the fourth Geneva convention
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 10/6/2004
The Palestinian Authority deplored the US use of the veto against the draft Arab resolution at the UN Security Council to halt the Israeli operations in Gaza, expressing fears that Israel will use this veto to expand its attacks.
The Palestinian negotiations affairs minister Saeb Oreikat said in a statement that Washington continues to show total alliance to Israel, adding that such a bias would contribute to the state of instability and the escalation of violence and terrorism in the Middle East.
He stressed that the Palestinian Authority will head to the UN General Assembly and that the Swiss government in its being the sponsor for the fourth Genera convention to convene urgent meetings to discuss the Israeli escalation and the aggression against Gaza.
The Palestinian representative at the UN, Nasser al-Qidweh, considered the veto as another sad day for the UN Security Council, noting that the council failed to carry out its mission, according to UN resolutions.
Al-Qidweh said that this is the 7th veto by the George W. Bush administration over the Palestinian issue. A matter which threatened the deterioration of condition in the region after the US had made itself a side in the conflict.
Al-Qidweh demanded to have a genuine Arab united stand to withstand the American bias to Israel. Algeria, which proposed the draft resolution on behalf of the Arab Group at the UN said that the failure of the proposed resolution is considered "a sad day for the Palestinian people and justice," and Algeria's ambassador at the UN Abdullah Baali said that the UN Security Council "has once again mistaken the right of the Palestinian people." Meantime, for the American veto, some 11 countries backed the draft Arab resolution and three countries abstained from voting. They are Germany, Britain and Romania. the US ambassador at the UN John Danforth criticized the draft resolution and described it as "unbalanced and is lacking credibility and objectivity." In his justification of resorting to the veto, Danfourth expressed his regret because the draft Arab resolution kept silence towards the attack by al-Qassam missile against Israel. He described the Palestinian attacks by these missiles as terrorist.
