New page in the relations between Algeria, Iran

The Algerian President Abdul Aziz Buraflika and the Iranian Muhammad Khatami yesterday stressed that the two countries have succeeded in eliminating any misunderstanding and to "opening a new page based on reciprocated confidence and respect." Khatami arrived in Algiers on Saturday in a state visits lasts for three days at the invitation of Butaflika.
Buraflika said during a dinner banquet held in Khatami's honor "Your visit is an evidence on the distinguished relations between our two countries who succeeded in eliminating any misunderstanding and opening a new page based on reciprocated confidence and respect." He expressed his "confidence" that Khatami's visit will "by its symbolic dimensions and practical reflections constitute a solid point in our bilateral relations which have witnessed remarkable progress in a short time."
For his part, Khatami stressed that his country embarks on a " foreign policy based on confidence, dialogue and reciprocated understanding," adding that these are based on "cooperation, campaigning for peace and regional and international reconciliation." He added that bilateral political relations should be based on "good intention and reciprocated good intention and confidence."
Relations between the two countries have improved with the accession of Presidents Khatami and Butaflika to power after a cession that lasted for 7 years marked by the severing of diplomatic relations in 1993. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were normalized in 2000 after a meeting between the two presidents on the sideline of a UN summit in New York. Algeria severed its relations with Tehran which it had accused of supporting the Islamists of the "Islamic front for Salvation."
