Allawi starts a visit to Jordan after Washington
Iraq-Jordan, Politics, 10/4/2004
Iraq's prime minister Eyad Allawi arrived on Saturday evening in Amman in a visit which lasts for two days.
Jordan's deputy prime minister Muhammad al- Haleyqa received the Iraqi Interim prime minister upon his arrival in Amman's airport coming from the US where he took part in the meetings of the UN General Assembly and met with the US President George W. Bush. The Jordanian news agency gave no details about the visit.
One Iraqi diplomatic source in Amman said that Allawi will hold during the visit talks with several Jordanian officials especially King Abdullah II dealing with developments in Iraq and the conference which will be held in Cairo over preparing for the Iraqi elections by the end of November, as well as bilateral relations between the two states.
However, a spokesman for the Jordanian cabinet said that Allawi pays a special visit to the Kingdom and that no official talks are decided to be held with the Jordanian officials.
This, undeclared visit, is Allawi's second visit to Jordan since he was elected as an interim prime minister for the Iraqi government. He had visited Jordan two and a half months ago where he was then welcomed greatly.
It is worth noting in this visit that the Jordanian armed forces played the old Iraqi anthem which goes back to the monarchy phase before the Baath party assumed part in the country.
Allawi is linked to close relations with Jordan since he was an opposition member to the toppled Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in the 1980s and his foundation of the Iraqi national reconciliation movement which used to have an office in Amman.
Although Allawi rejected a Jordanian proposal to send forces within the multinational forces to Iraq several months ago, the two states stressed they have surpassed this crisis and had no negative impact on their relations.
