Algeria receives Khatami after a ten year of boycott

Iranian president Muhammad Khatami arrives in Algeria tomorrow in an official visit which is the first since the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2003.

This visit came after the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the ambassadorial level after a ten year of boycott after the Algerian government blamed Tehran over supporting the Islamists opposition against the authority, involved in the acts of violence in Algeria that erupted in 1992.

The main event in the improvement of bilateral relations was the visit made by the Algerian president Abdul Aziz Butaflika to Tehran in 2003, followed by a diplomatic representation between the two countries.

The two sides seek to bring back relations to what they had been in the past when Algiers and Tehran used to maintain closer relations of understanding in discussed issued on the international arena.

The file of the Iranian nuclear program will be on top of the Algerian- Iranian talks. Algeria is expected to carry out a positive role on the disputes between Tehran and Washington with the aim of reaching a point of agreement that is conducive to dismantling tension between the two countries.
