Garang to meet with Egyptian officials on peace talks in Sudan
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 9/27/2004
Leader of Sudan People's Liberation Movement John Garang, who is currently in Cairo, will hold talks with the Egyptian officials on the Sudanese peace talks and the crucial stage Sudan is passing through, the movement spokesman Yasser Emran told MENA yesterday.
Garang's visit to Egypt follows a multi-leg tour which included the US, the spokesman said, adding that Garang met with US Secretary of State Colin Powell and several Congressional figures.
He also met with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, he said. Emran added that SPLM has warmly welcomed recent statements by President Mubarak in which he said peace agreement in Sudan must be finalized.
The movement is working in that direction, he added.
Garang will meet on October 7 with Sudanese first Vice President Ali Othman Taha to start a new round of Naivasha talks, he said.
He met in Cairo Sunday with Sudanese National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leader Othman al-Meirghani and other leaders of the opposition umbrella.
This followed a meeting between Garang and the US assistant secretary of state for African affairs.
The SPLM leader will be meeting Minister Omar Suleiman over a working dinner at the start of his consultations with the Egyptian leadership on the current situation in Sudan and joint action to clinch a final and comprehensive peace agreement in Sudan, he added.
The spokesman said that the SPLM is looking forward to an effective Egyptian role in implementing the agreements inked with the Khartoum government as well as Cairo's contribution to the interim phase programs and reconstruction of Sudan.
He stressed that the SPLM believes the only way out of the current crisis in Sudan is to finalize the peace agreement, form a broad national unity government comprising all political powers and pursue the Abuja and Cairo negotiation.
Garang has arrived in Cairo late Saturday for talks with the Egyptian leadership on peace talks in Sudan.
His visit came after a tour of the United States and a number of European countries.
He met in Washington with US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Congress leaders.
In New York, Garang held talks with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Garang will meet Sudanese First Vice President Ali Othman Taha in Kenya on October 7 in a new round of the IGAD-sponsored peace talks.
