Sudan announces foiling a coupe by Turabi supporters
Sudan, Politics, 9/25/2004
The Sudanese authorities announce yesterday it had foiled a coupe attempt against the government, hours before its implementation, and attributed it to Islamists members in the People's Congress party which is led by Hassan al-Turabi.
A statement by the ministry of the interior said that the persons involved in the coupe attempt intended to carry out their "conspiracy in coincidence with Friday's prayers." The parliamentary affairs minister Abdul Baser Seidrat said that this movement was part in a conspiracy discovered by the security forces which followed up the movement of the suspected elements.
Sdeirat added that foiling this movement was made upon the Friday's prayers time, and investigations continue to disclose the implications of this attempt.
On the other hand, the statement of the ministry of the interior said that all the conspiracy sides were detained with the exception of their leader al-Haj Adam Youssef, an official in the People's Congress party.
One of the party's leading figures disclosed that many of his colleagues were involved in a conspiracy to carry the weapons against the Sudanese government which continues to chase members of the party. However, another official in the party denied this information saying that the man gave all this information under pressure.
On September 8, the Sudanese authorities announced arresting 33 members of al-Turabi party, saying they wanted to topple the government and disseminate chaos so as to convince the public opinion that the Sudanese authorities lost control on Darfur district and to release al-Turabi. It also announced finding weapons shelters in the outskirts of the capital Khartoum, and attributed them to some of al-Turabi followers who was jailed by the end of March this year after a foiled coupe attempt was announced.
Worthy mentioning that Turabi was the master-mind for the regime of the current President Omar Hassan al-Bashir when he assumed power in 1989, before he was removed 10 years later.
