Gamal Mubarak: NDP reform proposals conform to opposition requests

Gamal Mubarak, the National Democratic Party (NDP)'s Policies Committee Secretary, said Thursday the party proposals on political, social and economic reforms go in line with the requests of the opposition parties.

Speaking at a press conference at the conclusion of the NDP 2nd annual conference, Gamal Mubarak said the reform proposals adopted by the Alexandria conference were the same of the NDP meeting in 2002.

He added the second NDP annual conference tackled means of introducing reforms in Egypt, including ways of activating the political life in the country. The NDP Policies Committee Secretary said the party along with the Egyptian government has been exerting strenuous efforts over the past period to activate the Egyptian political life. He cited, in this respect, the government's adoption of the NDP proposal on scrapping state security courts.

Gamal Mubarak denied claims that the reform proposals put forward by the NDP are only for the sake of the coming legislative elections.

He called for discussing the viewpoints of the opposition parties on the NDP's economic reform proposals.

Gamal Mubarak, the NDP policies Committee Secretary, renewed his opposition to power bequeathal in Egypt, asserting that President Hosni Mubarak had repeatedly expressed opposition to this issue.

On renewing Mubarak's presidential term, Gamal Mubarak said the issue is governed by the Egyptian constitution. He underlined the importance of the participation of youth and all society classes in the political life in Egypt, saying the NDP has always been in touch with all sects of the Egyptian society.

Gamal Mubarak called on opposition parties to engage in dialogue with the NDP on all issues of concern to the Egyptian citizens, especially economic ones.

He asserted that the NDP will continue to work for improving the services offered to the Egyptian citizens.

On President Mubarak's call for annulling the imprisonment punishment of journalists, Gamal Mubarak said a joint committee of the Justice Ministry, the Press Syndicate and the Higher Council for Journalism is preparing a draft law to be discussed during the coming session of the People's Assembly.

Regarding demands to cancel the state of emergency law in the country, Gamal Mubarak said many military orders were already repealed over the past year including the cancellation of the state security courts upon directives from President Mubarak.

On the Egyptian elections system, he said the individual system is the best for Egypt, stressing it was important to maintain the election compound system for the NDP membership but after correcting its defects.

Gamal Mubarak also underlined the importance of adopting a new vision for handling the state-owned projects.

On means of monitoring the NDP activities, Gamal Mubarak said the People's Assembly is closely watching the party's activities and that the party has its own mechanisms to make an internal censorship.

Gamal Mubarak said the latest customs reforms would be soon followed by taxation reforms for serving the best of the Egyptian citizens.

He said a new legislation would be referred to the People's Assembly over the coming period on consumer protection and banning of monopolistic practices.

The NDP policies chief said the current economic policies are designed to create more job opportunities, control the price hike and curb inflation. He added the general policies also target overcoming problems encountering the Egyptian citizens, creating more job opportunities and luring more investments.
