Al Raia: SA recognition of SADR has not changed power balance
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 9/24/2004
"The unexpected recognition" of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi republic (SADR) by South Africa "has not changed much the balance of power and the political equation," said the Jordanian "Al Raia" daily.
Pretoria announced last week it will establish diplomatic relations with the alleged "SADR," which Morocco has described as "disappointing" and inopportune."
The paper underlined that the Polisario separatist movement, claiming the secession of the Moroccan Sahara, is recognised by few countries, noting that many States have withdrawn their recognition of the Algeria-backed movement.
Morocco succeeded these past years in improving its relations with Algeria and set new cooperation moves to fight terror and drug trafficking and even made the initiative of cancelling visa requirement for Algerian nationals, "but Algeria has still not reciprocated."
"Al Raia" underscored that the Sahara is "secure" and the people of the Moroccan Southern provinces themselves "do not raise this problem."
The daily also noted that the stances of France and the United States converge towards "the need to find a phased out solution to the problem." (MAP) QA
