Ruling party in Egypt for reform, but in an extended time period
Egypt, Politics, 9/24/2004

The ruling National Democratic Party in Egypt refused in the final days of its second conference demands raised by the opposition to achieve political reform in one stroke in the country.

It considered the issues of amending the constitution and abrogating the emergency status as not the party's priorities. However, the party left the doors opened for dialogue with the opposition concerning all issues including amendment of the constitution and abrogating the state of emergency.

The secretary of the policies committee in the ruling party, son of the Egyptian President Jamal Mubarak, stressed in a press conference held before the convening of the conference's works, which lasted for three day, the rejection of the ruling national party and his own rejection to the principle of inheriting the rule, in referrence to talks of him assuming the presidency after his father.

Worthy mentioning that the fourth term of office for President Hosni Mubarak( 76 year old) expires in October. He so far did not announce if he will nominate himself for a new fifth term of office for other 6 years.

Jamal Mubarak indicted that the party conference approved several draft resolutions to expand political participation to be debated before the People's Assembly during the coming months including the parties law and the vocational trade unions law.

He described these amendments as sensitive to the essence of the " political scene " in Egypt. But he was simultaneously clear to the fact that religious parties will not be permitted in Egypt.
