AL delegation to Sudan; denial of obstructing aid
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 9/22/2004
An Arab League (AL) delegation will head next Monday to Khartoum to hold talks with the Sudanese officials dealing with Darfur crisis.
The AL assistant secretary general for political affairs Ahmad Bin Hali said that the AL is making contacts with various Sudanese sides concerned with the Darfur crisis in order to reach a peaceful settlement for the crisis.
Bin Hali who will preside over the AL delegation added that reaching a settlement is possible despite the resolution issued by the UN Security Council this week over Darfur.
The UN estimates the number of war killing in Darfur between 30,000- 5000 persons, all of them were killed at the pro- government Arab Jangaweid militias. The number of evacuees to neighboring Chad is estimated at 1.4 million persons.
The Sudanese army yesterday denied renewed clashes with the rebels in Darfur. A matter which obstructs the accession of humanitarian aid to the district.
The spokesman for the army Maj. Gen. Muhammad Bashir Suleiman said that the information stated by foreign media over the renewed fighting to the south of al-Fasher, capital of northern Darfur area, about obstructing the transportation of aid, are wrong, stressing that the military situation is calm and the displaced and evacuees continue to return back to their homes voluntarily.
