Khartoum studies the increase in the number of observers in Darfur, denies fighting eruption
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 9/22/2004

Sudan's deputy foreign minister Najib al-Kheir Abdul Wahab said that Khartoum will negotiate with the African union to increase number of the observers of the cease fire agreement working in Darfur to the west of Sudan.

The statement made by Abdul Wahab was made during his meeting with a delegation representing Amnesty International led by its secretary general Irene Khan, in response of the UN Security Council resolution no. 1564 over Darfur which concentrated on a pivotal role by the African Union in the crisis.

At the meantime, some 133 observers from the African union are deployed to supervise the implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed on April 8th between the Sudanese government and the two rebel movements. Those observers are protected by a force from Rwanda and Nigeria of 300 men.

The Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael announced by the beginning of this month that his country is ready to cooperate with the African union, while the Union showed readiness to deploy a peace keeping force in Darfur between 2000 and 3000 men.

Khartoum strongly opposes the deployment of an international peace keeping force in Darfur, considering that the security of Darfur is its own responsibility.
