Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 9/22/2004

Syria's Defence Minister Lieut. Gen. Hassan Turkmani discussed with Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud the redeployment of the Syrian troops working in Lebanon.

The two sides also reviewed means of further developing cooperation and fraternal relations between the Syrian and Lebanese armies under the conditions in which the region is passing.

The visit of Lieut. Gen. Turkmani to Lebanon comes as part of the duties of the Joint Military Syrian-Lebanese Committee ( JMSLC ) as defined by the Taif Agreement.

Lieut. Gen.Turkmani had already met his Lebanese counterpart Mahmoud Hammoud and army Commander Lieut. Gen. Michel Suleiman where a meeting of the JMSLC was held. A statement published after the meeting said the two sides reviewed the steps already carried out concerning the redeployment of the Syrian forces in Lebanon.

Both sides decided to follow up on the issue of redeployment, and to locate other positioning points according to the plan put by the two leaderships in implementation of Taif Agreement.

The two sides stressed necessity of continued consultations and coordination in the framework of fraternity, cooperation as well as agreements signed between the two states.
