US Treasury delegation in Damascus regarding Iraqi assets
Syria-USA, Politics, 9/20/2004

A delegation representing the US treasury department started an official visit to Syria lasting for two days with the aim to draw a final settlement for the Iraqi assets file deposited in the Syrian bank, estimated at $ 300 million.

Well-informed sources in Damascus said that the delegation will hold meetings with Syrian officials including the minister of economy and foreign trade Ghassan al-Refaee with the aim of closing the "file of the Iraqi assets." A file which is under differences between Washington and Damascus, among several issues that worsened Syrian- American relations.

The visit of this American delegation comes several days following a visit held by the US under secretary of state for the Middle East affairs William Burns to Damascus, during which "a move was made forward" in the field of cooperation between the two sides in the border issues.
