On the Syrian-Malaysian relations
Syria-Malaysia, Politics, 9/20/2004
The Malaysian Embassy in Damascus celebrates on Monday the 47th anniversary of independence, marked by ever-growing, distinguished bilateral relationship over the past fifty years between the two countries of Syria and Malaysia.
Syria has been giving special priority to enhancing these bilateral ties, as represented by the exchange of visits on senior levels between the two countries, especially the visit by President Bashar al-Assad to Malaysia last year to take part in the Summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference ( OIC). The visit was preceded by several visits by senior Syrian officials to Kuala Lumpur.
King Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail of Malaysia paid a state visit to Syria last May. The visit followed a significant visit by the then-Premier Mahatir Mohammad to Damascus. Preparations are underway for exchanging visits as part of efforts to bolster existing ties between the two countries.
Malaysian Ambassador in Damascus, Dato' Abdullah Sani Bin Omar, expressed pleasure over the celebration of the National Day of Malaysia for the third year in Syria, stressing that Syrian-Malaysian relations are marked by very special ties.
He pointed out that both countries share identical points of view over international issues and conflicts, particularly over the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Palestinian question and the situations in Iraq. As well as other issues pertaining to developing countries.
The Ambassador said his country highly appreciates the Syrian people and leadership and evaluates its support to Malaysia, the duty president of the OIC and the Non-Aligned Movement ( NAM), adding that Malaysia will work to unite the stances of the Islamic and developing countries to speak in one voice to be heard by big powers.
He indicated that Syrian-Malaysian relations, which started in 1958, has witnessed a turning point over the past few years and covered new fields of cooperation, including data technology and communication as well as economy and trade.
He said the volume of annual trade exchanges between the two countries amounts to $ 150 million, adding that the amount could be increased as a result of great interest shown by companies from both sides to boost mutual cooperation.
