South African decision regarding so-called SADR contrary to friendship spirit
Morocco-South Africa, Politics, 9/18/2004

The Moroccan house of counselors expressed deep surprise over the decision of the South African government to recognize the so-called Sahrawi Republic (SADR), stressing this "act is contrary to the spirit of friendship and to the history of the common fight waged by the Moroccan and South African Peoples."

The upper house of the Moroccan Parliament said the decision was shortsighted and unjustified, for it goes back on the many statements made by South African political and diplomatic milieus.

The act shows that South African authorities want to make the conflict endure for reasons that do not serve the African continent, more so that several African countries have withdrawn their recognition of SADR.

For its part, the socialist alliance, grouping the Party for progress and socialism, the socialist democratic party and Al Ahd, said the decision hurts the international moves in favor of a political solution to the conflict opposing Morocco and the separatist Polisario.

The alliance added in a communique the decision will "have no incidence" on the will and unity of the Moroccan People.
