Iraqi airways resumes flights after 14 year suspension
Iraq, Business, 9/18/2004
The Iraqi airways resume its flights as from today after a suspension
that lasted for 14 years because of the war and the sanctions.
The company said it will run regular flight twice a week to each of Syria and Jordan. One official in the company said " this is the first step for the Iraqi airways, we all hope to expand our service so as to include Dubai within weeks." The company says that its offices actually sold tickets at prices that can not be afforded by the majority. The one price ticket to Damascus ( both ways) is $ 600 while a two-way ticket to Amman is $ 750. The same trip by land costs only $ 40.
After a test flight from Jordan in August, the company was denied a license to regular flight over the Jordanian territories. However, having got the consent now, means that the Iraqi airlines can now compete with the Jordanian Royal airways which actually runs flights from and to Iraq.
