Spanish right and pro-PP media wage war on Morocco, Press
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 9/16/2004

The Spanish right and the press supporting the Popular Party (PP) are waging "a media war" on Morocco and incite the public opinion to hamper the "noteworthy rapprochement" between Rabat and Madrid initiated since the socialists took power in Spain, the London-based "Asharq Al Awsat" daily said.

The Arabic daily, which cites "El Mundo" and "La Razon" as newspapers taking part in the war, added "El Mundo" has lately developed hard-to-swallow theses in the aftermath of March elections that ousted the PP alleging Moroccan intelligence would have been involved in the Madrid attacks.

Asharq Al Awsat said the Spanish newspaper did not only ran hostile stories on Morocco, but also recruited its assistant director, Casimiro Garcia Abadillo to write a book titled "Revenge" hinting Morocco reportedly took revenge on Spain because of the occupation of the Leila islet.

The London daily said the hostile stand of El Mundo contradicts cooperation moves between Madrid and Rabat particularly the help extended to Spanish investigators of the March 11 attacks.

For its part, the Moroccan media continue to protest "the allegations" of El Mundo, with Rissalat Al Oumma saying the Spanish daily does not miss an opportunity to fuel hostile feelings towards Morocco and tries by all means to disrupt the serenity of Moroccan-Spanish relations.

"Al Mona‰taf" newspaper said the attack of El Mundo against the sacred values of the Moroccan people Ç stirs a knife in a wound which has began healing."

The daily added Moroccans know the hidden parties behind the misdeeds of the Spanish publication which in no means represents the Spanish people and which harms the democratic forces in Spain.
