Algerian army kills five gunmen to the east of the capital
Algeria, Local, 9/13/2004
The Algerian security forces killed five gunmen in the course of a large attack against areas suspected to be premises for the armed groups to the east of the capital Algiers.
Government security sources said that five members of "al-Salafeyah group for call and fighting" were killed near al-Tineh town last Friday evening, noting that two of the killed men might have taken part in an attack on a military vehicle in Bumerdas province two weeks ago in which seven soldiers were killed.
The army and security forces and the military forces are taking part in a large military operation that started several months ago with the aim of exterminating this group in Bumerdas area which had witnessed an increase in the armed attacks this year.
Worthy mentioning that "al-Salafeyah group for fighting and call" issued recently a statement in which it threatened to escalate and vowed to change its strategy and transfer its activities to major cities including the capital Algiers.
Several armed clashes took place between the security forces and the armed groups on the same area during August, when these groups killed in an ambush 5 military men and two police members in a place, 50 km far from the capital.
Since the beginning of the current year, 340 persons have been killed in acts of violence in Algiers, according to calculations based on press and official information.
