Syria, Politics, 9/13/2004

The Syrian authorities released two human rights activists who had been held since the end of 2001.

Lawyer Anwar al-Bunni said that the authorities released each of Kamal Labawani and Habib Saleh after they had spent three years in prison under charges of violating the constitution.

The two released men were within a group of ten persons who chanted slogans demanding democratic openness during the phase which was called the "spring of Damascus" and followed President Bashar al-Assad's assuming power as a President of Syria in July, 2000. Still, there are four of " Damascus group" in prison including the renowned Syrian economist Aref Dalila, currently ill, according to his lawyer.
