France agrees with Egypt's banning two Egyptologists from making hole in Khufu
Egypt-France, Local, 9/11/2004
Zahi Hawwas, the Secretary General of Egypt Supreme Council of Antiquities, convinced French officials of the official Egyptian viewpoint with regard to banning two French Egyptologists from making a hole in King Cheops (Khufu) Pyramid.
This came in a debate that was held as part of the ninth Egyptology conference that was opened on Monday and will run till September 12 in Southeast France.
Both Egyptologists claimed they had located the burial chamber of King Cheops (Khufu), the builder of the Great Pyramid in Giza.
The duo say they only await the Egyptian authorities' approval to make a hole in the pyramid to confirm their discovery which, they say, would be the most important in history and would even outdo these of King Tutankhamen's tomb and the Rosetta Stone that helped decipher the hieroglyphic language.
In earlier statements, Hawwas had said that history would never forgive him if he allowed those two, whom he dubbed as "fame and money seekers," to make a hole in the Pyramid.
Some 1,000 Egyptologists and students and persons who have interest in the ancient Egyptian civilization take part in the conference which is expected to witness 400 speeches and lectures as Egyptologists from Egypt, Australia, Mexico, Argentina as well as France are now exchanging views.
Meanwhile, Hawwas forwarded an Egyptian paper before the conference calling for crucial rehabilitation of the international society on Egyptology.
Hawwas told MENA correspondent that the conference approved Egypt's paper and ordered the formation of a committee that would be in charge of adopting reforms.
