Abuja negotiations over Darfur are in a deadlock
Sudan, Politics, 9/10/2004
News reports said yesterday that Abuja negotiations between the Sudanese government and the rebels reached a deadlock, as both the government and the rebels clung to the needs that their demands be included in the African draft project to establish security.
The two sides exchanged accusations over responsibility of the stumbled talks. Najib al-Kheir Abdul Wahab announced that the two rebel movements raised the ceiling of demands concerning security.
The negotiators of the African Union said that Khartoum was persistent to dismantle the weapons of the Jangaweid and the rebels simultaneously and that there is no need to deploy more forces of the African Union.
On the other hand, the rebels clung to not drop their weapons before maintaining the stability of conditions in the area, dismantling the weapons of the Jangaweid, establishing a no fly zone over Darfur, expanding the mission of the African Union forces, and forming an independent international investigation committee to discuss human rights violations.
