Morocco's anti-locusts aid to Senegal, highly symbolic move (Minister)
Morocco-Senegal, Politics, 9/9/2004
The aid Morocco extended to Senegal to help it face locusts threat is a highly symbolic move that consolidates relations between the two countries, said Wednesday Senegalese Agriculture Minister, Habib Sy, as he received the Moroccan aid in Dakar airport.
Morocco has sent Senegal 30 tons of pesticides, two spraying planes, an anti-locusts expert and a team of technicians.
"Through this initiative, Morocco brings a solution to the problem we are facing in fighting locusts," said the minister, recalling that president Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal, had called on the international community to support the country by providing it with appropriate equipment to fight locusts, rather than financial help.
"Morocco's aid already allows to win a battle, that of African solidarity in hardship," noted the minister, voicing hope that Senegal will be able to win as well the battle against locusts soon.
After they invaded Dakar last week, locust swarms continue to advance in the Senegalese territory where 6 of the country's 11 regions have been seriously damaged.
Morocco's aid to Senegal is part of a regional and international campaign to fight West Africa's worst locust plague in 15 years.
