Lahoud, Berri highlight Lebanon's commitment to pan Arab stances
Lebanon-Regional, Politics, 9/8/2004

Lebanese President Emile Lahoud Tuesday said Lebanon is still committed to its national and pan-Arab stances and rejects to bargain on its rights and sovereignty.

"Coordination between Syria, Lebanon and Iran is a distinguished example that should be followed among friendly and brotherly countries," Lahoud said during a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador in Beirut.

The Iranian ambassador, for his part, said Iran backs Lebanon and condemns the foreign intervention in the Lebanese internal affairs.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri declared that the Parliament launched a campaign to confront the drive Lebanon is exposed to, and to clear its stances vis-a-vis the UN Security Council's intervention in the internal affairs and in its relations with Syria.

"The Parliament decided to send a message to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as well as to the speakers of the Houses of Representatives and Senates of the countries members at the Security Council enclosed with copies of al-Taif Agreement and the Fraternity, Coordination and Cooperation agreement with Syria," Berri told a press conference held at the Lebanese Parliament in Beirut.

Berri said his parliament will hold necessary contacts with the French National Association and with the French Speaker of the National Assembly to stress Lebanon's interest in the French-Lebanese relations and the French-Syrian relations.

In this context, Berri referred to the speech of the French President Jacque Chirac at the Lebanese Parliament, during his visit to Lebanon, in which he expressed understanding of the Lebanese situation and his understanding that the Syrian presence in Lebanon is linked to prevailing peace in the region.
