Arab Parliamentary Union decides to create an Arab parliament

The 3rd meeting of the legal and polical commissions of the Arab Parliamentary Union decided to create an Arab Parliament to be preceded by a transtion parliament for a five year period and to be based in Damascus.

The final declaration of the commissions meeting provides for the creation of a commission on the fight of corruption and a seond one on issues of the disabled.

The meeting also drafted a reommendantion on the amandment of the Arab League charter which will be presented to the Arab summit to be held next March in Algiers.

The Beirut declaration denounced the crimes perpetrated by Israel in the occupied territories and condemned the continuation of the building of settlments in occupied Golan Heights and around Al Qods. It welcomed the decison of non aligned ministers to boycott Israeli products and impose sanctions against countries contributing to the construction of the separation wall.

Participants in the meeting expressed concern over the deterioration of the security situation in Iraq and voiced support for the unity, sovereignty and independance of this Arab country. They also voiced support to Syria to retrieve the Golan, reiterated Lebanon's right to get back its occupied territories and welcomed the accord signed by the government and the popular movement of Sudan.
