Abu al-Gheit, Suleiman to visit Tel Aviv shortly; Egypt considers Israel's threats to Syria as unjustifiable
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 9/4/2004
Egypt stressed yesterday that the Israeli threats to Syria are "unjustifiable." This was expressed by the spokesman for the Egyptian presidency Majid Abdul Fattah.
Abdul Fattah indicated that the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Abu al-Gheit and the director of the intelligence Lt. gen. Omar Suleiman will visit Israel before the mid of the current month.
Abdul Fattah said that his country is making contact with Israel and the US and also with other countries members at the UN Security Council to explain the dimension of this position, adding that contacts are never stopped and there is no evidence on a link between the explosions which took place in Israel and Syria. In this regard, Abdul Fattah remarked the announcement made by the Israeli army chief of staff Moshe Yaloun on Wednesday to that Israel "will move against those who support terrorism" following the two explosions of Beer Sheba which resulted in killing 16 Israelis as well as the two Palestinians, executors of the twin operations.
The chairman of the Israeli military intelligence Gen. Aharoun Zeafi ruled out a "direct Syrian involvement in Beer Sheba operation." Zeafi told journalists on Friday that he could not establish a direct link between the twin Palestinian operation in Beer Sheba and the general headquarters of the Palestinian organizations in Damascus, stressing that "no one in Israel is now planning for a military campaign against Syria."
