Palestinian prisoners suspend their strike, occupation displaced hundreds in Gaza
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 9/3/2004

Most of the Palestinian prisoners who were in a food strike, suspended their food strike which they had started in the mid of August following negotiations that lasted for two days between the strike's leadership and the Israeli jails administration.

The chairman of the Palestinian prisoner club, Issa Qaraqe, told reporters in Hebron that the prisoners achieved most of their demands, including halting naked inspection, permitting them to meet with their relatives during visits without barriers and permitting them to talk with their families by telephone.

He explained that the Palestinian prisoners in Beer Sheba prison are still continuing their strike while negotiations are made with the prison administration to end the strike. The strike of the prisoners coincided with demonstrations and sit-in and general strikes in various parts of the Palestinian territories in solidarity with the detainees.

Meantime, Israel detained 14 Palestinians in campaigns of breaking-in carried out in different areas of the West Bank on Wednesday and Thursday early morning, according to Israeli occupation sources.

Also, the Israeli occupation forces withdrew from Khan Younis in Gaza after it had displaced some 300 Palestinians in Khan Younis camp for the Palestinian refugees who became homeless after these forces bombarded two housing units on Wednesday night including scores of apartments.

People of the two buildings said that the occupation forces did not give them the chance to carry some of their properties despite childrens' cries, noting that Israeli explosives experts implanted explosives in all parts of the two buildings and detonated them.

Meantime, Palestinian and Israeli sources announced that violent clashes took place between armed Palestinians and the occupation army in the Austrian quarters area to the west of Khan Younis to the south of Gaza.

The Israeli radio admitted that two of its soldiers were slightly injured as they were hit by a missile that fell near their jeep car they were riding at the entrances of Khan Younis.

Meantime, the occupation authorities on Wednesday closed Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt. Israel crossed the crossing on July 18 for three weeks and this resulted in a humanitarian crisis that resulted in abortion of pregnant women and death of patients.
