Syria: UN security council voting over Lebanon's sovereignty is unjustified
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 9/2/2004

Syria said that there is nothing justifying demands raised by the USA that the UN Security Council vote on a draft resolution asking it to honor Lebanon's sovereignty.

The Syrian Foreign minister Farouk al-Shara stressed in a telephone call with his Lebanese peer and the secretary general of the Arab League that this step is not justified.

Talks in the two telephone calls which al-Shara had made yesterday dealt with the proposed French- American resolution to the UN security council to restrict the Syrian influence in Lebanon.

It is, however, expected that the Lebanese parliament will agree in a session to be held tomorrow on an amendment on the constitution permitting continued term of office for the Lebanese President for three more years. Lahoud's current term of office expires in November.

However, the US rejected a complaint proposed by Lebanon to the UN over proposals submitted by the former together with France in order to limit the Syrian intervention in Lebanon, stressing that it is an internal affair.
