Chalabi survives assassination attempt
Iraq, Politics, 9/2/2004

The leader of the Iraqi National Congress party, Ahmad Chalabi, survived an assassination attempt when his procession was exposed to an attack while he was returning back from Najaf city to Baghdad yesterday morning.

Chalabi told journalists that two of his guards were injured and one is in a critical health condition when gunmen opened fire at his procession after two cars chased the procession in al-Teifeh to the south of Baghdad.

He added "I have seen many burnt cars on the road to al-Teifeh. An end should be put to the terrorist acts in this region." Worthy mentioning that Chalabi, the former member in the solved governing council was among the symbols of the Iraqi opposition. He spent years in exile in the USA. After he was close to Washington, the American gave him up because of doubts on relations he had established with the Iranian intelligence.

Moreover, one Iraqi judge issued a warrant of arrest against him in August, but the Iraqi authorities have not completed measures on this case. The Iraqi police, supported by the American forces broke into the house of Chalabi and the headquarters of his party and confiscated several documents and other contents.
