The National Council for Human Rights is considering a world conference for eliminating mines
Egypt, Local, 9/1/2004

Boutros Ghali, Head of National Council for Human Rights in Egypt is studying a formula that guarantees to the conference prepared by the Council on mines elimination to be stepped up as an international conference.

Ghali required that the preparation for the conference would be considered as international and which is due to be held next April. International high-ranking figures would be invited as well as world and Human Rights organizations.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat looks for the possibility of holding the conference in an area near the western desert and Alamain instead of Cairo. The conference recommendations would be entitled" Alamain recommendations" to get international attention to the conference will be attended by international political and legal figures. The invitation would also be directed to a number of officials in the countries responsible for planting mines in the western desert.

A number of the Council members expect that Dr Boutros Ghali would invite the Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofe Annan to attend the conference in addition to organizations interested in environmental health and economic development particularly because the conference includes workshops discussing many pivots such as mines and the right to live, mines, environment, and development.

The conference would focus on discussing the official stances of the countries responsible for mines but believe that they are not committed internationally or legally to eliminate mines but they have no objection to participate in elimination of mines.

However, the discussions will outline another vision that depends on the fact that these countries when they planted these mines, they had their own justifications which do not stand anymore, the fact that justifies now an international commitment by these countries to remove the mines particularly that they eliminated the naval mines. The land mines are not less dangerous.
