Continued accusations between the government and the rebels
Sudan, Politics, 9/1/2004
Tension prevailed in Darfur following the end of the grace period given by the UN to Sudan, and Khartoum is waiting for the content of the report submitted to the UN Security Council on the extent of its commitment to international demands.
This coincided with the continued exchange of accusations between the Sudanese government and the rebels. A Sudanese government official accused al-Adel Wal-Musawat ( Justice and equity) organization of kidnapping 22 Sudanese working with one of the relief organizations.
Chairman of the government crisis cell in South Darfur, Hassan Idris, explained that they were taking part in a fortification campaign when they were attacked by gunmen in al-Sha'ereyah area to the southern west of Neyala, capital of the district, and took them to an unknown destination.
Chief negotiator of the movement in Abuja, Muhammad Ahmad Taqad, denied Khartoum's accusation and stressed that the negotiation delegation made contacts with all field leaders in the two rebel movements who stressed they are not involved in the kidnapping operation. Taqad alleged that the area where the kidnapping took place is under the control of Jangaweid militias.
