Qurei': PA Seeks application of Geneva Convention to Palestinian Prisoners
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 8/18/2004
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei' on Tuesday appealed to the international community to shoulder its responsibility with respect to the dangers threatening Palestinian prisoners who went into the third day of an open-ended hunger strike in Israeli jails to protest their detention conditions.
"Prisoners in the Israeli jails have not resorted to the open-ended hunger strike until after things aggravated to unacceptable and unbearable levels," Qurei' said. The Prime Minister joined hands with a sit-in organized in Bira in solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners.
Accompanying him were Prisoners Affairs Minister Hisham Abdel Razeq, Minister without portfolio Qadourah Faris and Palestinian Captives Club President Issa Qaraqei.
Qurei made it clear that the Palestinian Authority would leave no stone unturned in its endeavour to back the demands of the Palestinian prisoners.
"We will take the case to the UN and ask, in accordance with international law, that Palestinian prisoners be treated as prisoners of war.
