Saudi Arabia, Politics, 8/18/2004

Some 100 Saudis including 12 women addressed a petition to the Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz demanding the release of three reformers who are being tried on charge of calling for the establishment of a " constitutional monarchy in the Kingdom."

The signatories of the petition, whom are 95 Saudis from al-Jouf area ( 350 Km to the north of al-Riyadh) complained against the continued detention of Matrouk al-Faleh, who is from the same area, Ali al-Dumeini and Abdullah Hamid.

They announced " all our son, Dr. Matrouk al-Faleh had done comes in line with the reform inclination proclaimed by the leadership.." They demanded the release of al-Faleh or bringing him before a "just and open " trial.

An open trial for al-Faleh, a university teacher at King Fahd University, and the persons detained with him started on August 9th before one Riyadh's courts.

The Saudi Arabian attorney accuses the three men of issuing statements and petitions and working to get signatures from Saudis, as well as accusing them of demanding " constitutional monarchy and using western idioms " in their demands to change the regime while they are accused by the officials of threatening national unity and making contacts with foreign sides.

The three Saudis are within other 12 activists detained on March 16 and half of them were released after two days after they vowed to stop demanding in open, reform. Other three were released by the end of March.
