Palestinian prisoners start an open strike, one Palestinian killed in Jerusalem
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 8/16/2004
Thousands of Palestinian prisoners started in four Palestinian detention centers an open hunger strike in order to improve their detention conditions; while the Israeli authorities before hand refused to give any concession.
It is decided, however, that some 8,000 Palestinians will take part in the strike in protest of the "inhuman practices" against them. The occupation prisons authorities said that the strike covered the prisons of Nafha, Eishel in Southern Israel and Haddarim to the north of Tel Aviv.
For its part, the Israeli prisons authorities carried out its threats and a statement issued by it said that directly after the beginning of the strike, the detainees were deprived of several privileges including confiscation of their electricity equipment especially the radio and the TV.
The statement said " we deprived them of getting papers and cigarettes and from family visits," noting that medical teams were formed and security measures were taken to avoid any disorder.
The united Islamic national leadership explained that among the inhuman practices in the Israeli occupation jails is exposing the detainees to collective naked and humiliating inspection and in " conditions, shameful for humanity with insulting words, assaults, violence and the use of weapons by special Israeli army revenge units."
Meantime, one Israeli soldier was strongly injured after he was stabbed in his neck by a young Palestinian at the entrance of the old city of Jerusalem. The Palestinian youth was killed immediately by the bullets of the stabbed soldier.
Earlier, witnesses said that Israeli helicopters fired three missiles at Rafah camp for the Palestinian refugees in Gaza early morning yesterday after clashes with activists.
For its part, the occupation army admitted that one missile at least hit an open air area while the other fell near on empty house. No immediate news arrived on killed or injured persons.
