Darfur rebellions ask for American, British military intervention, Sudan denies bombarding Darfur by helicopters
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 8/12/2004

Sudan has denied what was announced by the UN on attacks by helicopters in Darfur district, stressing that the security situation in the district is improving but needs more time, while the Sudan liberation movement ( rebels ) asked both the US and Britain to interfere militarily urgently in Darfur before the end of the 30-day grace period given by the UN to Sudan to solve the crisis.

Sudan minister of state for foreign affairs Najib al-Khayer Abdul Wahab said in Khartoum that Yan Brunik the special representative for the UN secretary general Kofi Annan over Sudan signed on Tuesday an assessment which states that the government achieved a " notable progress " concerning protection and security.

Sudan has been exposed to an intensified international pressure to control the Jangaweid militias of Arab origins and it has before itself less than 3 weeks to show the UN Security Council it is achieving a progress towards disarming weapons in Darfur. Should this not happen, sanctions will be imposed on Sudan.

Meantime, the Sudan's Liberation Movement asked for an American- British interference in the district. The leader of the movement, Abdul Wahid Muhammad Ahmad Nour, said from Murra mountain area, to the west of Darfur " I extend a personal message to the US President George Bush and the British prime minister Tony Blair in order to protect millions of the displaced from the danger of death waiting them." He added " Bush and Blair should not wait until the end of the grace period given by the UN Security Council to interfere in Sudan because the situation does not permit that."
