Lebanese-Syrian Irrigation Ministers inspect joint dam projects

Syria's Minister of Irrigation, Nader Bunni, and Lebanese Minister of Waters and Power, Ayyoub Hamid, on Wednesday inspected dams in the western areas of Homs, central Syria and the site of the proposed dam on the Great Southern River.
The two Ministers made an on-spot tour of the suggested 3,500 by 70 meters dam at Edlin area, with a storage capacity of around 70 million cubic meters.
Engineers said the cost of the 35- high meters dam could total two million dollars. The floor could be covered by clay soil, and it could produce power up to 10 Megawatt.
The two Ministers also toured Telhosh Dam, near the Syrian city of Telkalakh. The Dam's storage capacity is 52 million cubic meters of accumulated waters, and irrigates some villages as well as waters up to 7,000 hectares of arable lands. The dam was built in 1999.
Both Ministers also visited the 696-meter long Muzayyana Dam, whose capacity amounts to 20 million cubic meters, and irrigates 2034 hectares. The dam was erected last year.
