Schroeder will visit Libya after compensations for the victims of Berlin explosion
Libya-Germany, Politics, 8/11/2004

The spokesman for the German government Bella Anda said that Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder accepted the invitation extended by the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi to visit Tripoli after eliminating the barrier behind this visit, which is to pay compensations for the families of the victims of blowing off "La Bell" Club in Berlin 1986.

The spokesman added that defining the date of the visit will be made later, noting that Berlin will help Tripoli to modernize its economy. Observers consider that settling the case and Libya s payment of USD 35 million for the families of the Club's victims would facilitate Libya s joining the Euro- Mediterranean Association Agreement and ends its isolation on the international arena.

The Libyan ambassador in Germany Saeed Abdul Hadi al-Ati said that al-Qathafi charity foundation will sign in Berlin a memorandum to pay the compensation for the non- American victims, while a separate contract detailed and official will be signed between the two sides in Tripoli on September 3rd.

For his part, the director of al-Qathafi charity foundation Saleh Abdul Salam said that a sum of 35 million dollars will be paid in three phases within 6 months. He explained that a sum of one million will be paid for the family of the Turkish victim, while USD 350,000 will be paid for the 11 damaged who had permanent disabilities while the rest of the sum will be for the other 57 injured.

News reports in Tripoli said that the agreement states one article that provides to not sue the Libyans judicially.
