Allawi is officially invited to visit Iran
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 8/11/2004
Iran announced yesterday it had extended an official invitation for the Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi to visit it.
The Iranian official news agency quoted the Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi as saying yesterday that " Tehran extended a message to the Interim Iraqi prime minister to visit Iraq." But did not set a date for the visit.
Allawi, who in July made an Arab tour, announced on Sunday that " Iran is the only neighboring country which did not extend an invitation to us to visit it," noting he will visit Iran when he receives an invitation from it.
The Iranian invitation, however, comes at a time when relations between the two countries are witnessing tense relations especially following the repeated escalation made by the Iraqi defense minister to Tehran that Iran is Iraq's first enemy and that its imprints are on the fighting currently taking place in Najaf city and certain cities in southern Iraq, in addition to the kidnapping of the Iranian Consul in Karbala, Freidon Jehani, several day ago.
