Nearby Libyan- German agreement over compensations on night club explosion
Libya-Germany, Politics, 8/11/2004
News reports in Libya said yesterday that Libya has reached with the German side an agreement providing that Tripoli has to pay compensations to relatives of the victims of the attack against " La Belle " Club in the German capital in 1986 which Germany accuses Libya of carrying out.
While the size of compensations is not known yet, a Libyan delegation resumes its talks with the lawyer of the victims in Berlin and well-informed sources expected the two sides to sign the agreement officially one week as from now.
Al-Qathafi charity society which is led by Seif al-Islam al- Qathafi, son of the Libyan leader, seeks to finalize the agreement with the families of 160 persons, of non- Americans injured and one woman killed in the attack.
Stevan Megan, one lawyer for the families of the wounded said that they demand some USD 600,000 for each family for strong injuries and 400,000 for slight injuries.
In 2001, a German court sentenced that the Libyan intelligence involved in the attack where two American soldiers were killed and found guilty four persons including one former Libyan diplomat.
Observers consider that settling the file of Berlin's club will remove the last obstacle before signing the Association Agreement between Libya and the European Union after Tripoli's approval to pay USD 2.7 billion as compensations for the families of Lockerbie victims in 1988 and USD 170 million for the blowing up of a French passengers plane over Niger in 1989.
This, however, comes while the US is witnessing separate judicial cases submitted by the families of two killed American soldiers and 40 wounded ones of the victims of the Club's explosion.
