Al Khaleej : Morocco aspires to unify Maghreb peoples, minister
Morocco-Maghreb, Politics, 8/10/2004

Morocco aspires to unify the peoples of the Arab Maghreb, stated the Moroccan foreign minister, noting that "borders and visas undermine relations" between these states that share common interests.

In an interview published Sunday by "Al Khaleej" newspaper, Mohammed Benaissa said Morocco's decision last month to lift visa for Algerian citizens is motivated by the hope to "establish relations based on a fresh cooperation and a determination to boost and reinforce the Arab Maghreb Union."

"There is unanimity that the market of UMA cannot work without two important countries, Morocco and Algeria," Benaissa pointed out, highlighting the need to work jointly for an entente.

On a question about Morocco's stance as to the calls for the Arab states to institute democratic reforms, Benaissa said Morocco has no problem with this issue since it has known pluralism and elections since a long time.
