Iraq, Politics, 8/10/2004

The Iraqi judge Zuheir al-Maliki who issued a warrant of arrest against the chairman of the Iraqi Congress party Ahmad Chalabi and his nephew Salem Chalabi, the chairman of the Iraqi court in charge of trying the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, announced that they will be detained immediately upon their arrival at the Iraqi territories.

Al-Maliki statement is considered an answer to the announcement made by the chairman if the Iraqi National Congress that he will return back to Iraq to face accusations addressed to him which he had described as lies. Ahmad Chalabi, who is in Tehran, was just recently was under the protection of the Pentagon.

The Iraqi government accuses Ahmad Chalabi of counterfeiting Iraqi currency. Accusations were addressed to him following a complaint from the Iraqi central bank followed an inspection attempt for his house and office in May this year.

Ahmad Chalabi answered the warrant of arrest issued against him that he will return back to Iraq shortly to withstand " the basically rude political lies against him," stressing he will not be " standstill while such lies are issued." He accused "Baathists " supporters of Saddam Hussein to be behind this crisis because as he alleged, blame him for bringing the Americans to Iraq.

In Amman which issued a sentence against Chalabi over a bankruptcy of the Betra bank. A matter which obliged the government to compensate its clients at 400 million dollars, the spokeswoman for the Jordanian government Asmaa Khuder considered the issuance of the warrant of arrest as a common matter, stressing that Jordan is looking forward to that day when judicial sentences are implemented against Ahmad Chalabi.

Ahmad Chalabi who used to be very close to Dick Chenny, the US Vice President, and lived for a long time under the protection of the Americans, lost his glamour at the US after the US accused him of sneaking information to Iran.
