Ismael rejects criticism of the west, Khartoum promises to solve Darfur crisis
Sudan, Politics, 8/10/2004

The Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael has renewed his reservation over the grace period given by the UN Security Council concerning Darfur crisis. But he said he expects his country to meet the demands of the UN to achieve a progress in the field of security and human rights in the district.

In a press conference held in Cairo yesterday, Ismael loomed that there are hidden intention in the US, which he did not mention by name and admitted there is a crisis in Darfur district, holding the rebels responsible for it. He promised that Khartoum will take fundamental steps to solve this crisis.

The Sudanese minister indicated that his government is the first donor for the humanitarian aid in Darfur, noting that it cover 50% of the population needs there.

He also admitted the responsibility of the government for restoring back security and order and imposing the state's sovereignty, protection of citizens and ensure humanitarian aids as well as the responsibility to finding out a political solution for this case.

Ismael also criticized what he called the large unjustified attack by certain media, especially the US congress over the situation in Darfur, expressing great happiness because Cairo's meeting of Sunday reached the conclusion that what is taking place there is not an annihilation or mass cleansing, rather a humanitarian, security and political problem.

The Sudanese minister said that Darfur crisis led to the killing of 5,000 persons including 486 Sudanese policemen since its eruption 18 months ago, rather than scores of thousands as alleged by western mass media.

In another development, the Sudanese government accused the authorities in Eritrea of building up its forces at the joint borders between the two countries. The governor of Kasla stressed the dispatching the forces to the east of Sudan comes in the framework of a conspiracy reflected in a military escalation in the area in support of an attack planned by the Sudanese opposition which takes Eritrea as a headquarters.
