Egyptian FM for giving Sudan enough time to deal with Drafur crisis
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 8/9/2004
Egypt on Sunday called again for giving the Sudanese government enough time to tackle the crisis of the western region of Darfur.
Hours before an urgent meeting in Cairo of the Arab Foreign Ministers to discuss the crisis, Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Gheit told reporters the one-month deadline set by the recent UN Security Council resolution was not sufficient given the divergent complexities of the situation in the volatile area.
"The Sudanese government has been working hard to control the situation in Darfur with the cooperation of the Arab League, the African Union and the international communityÉ.the sincere efforts exerted by the government has helped improved the human situation thereÉ," Abu Gheit added.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed the hope the Security Council would extend the period given to the Sudanese government when it reconvenes to discuss the problem.
