Iraq-Lebanon, Politics, 8/7/2004

The Shiite clergy Ayatullah al-Auzma Ali al-Seistani arrived in London for medical treatment after he had " simple heart problem." This was in a trip in which he stopped in Beirut for hours during which he had met with the speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri.

The spokesman for al-Seistani in London, Murtada al-Kashmiri said that the clergy suffers " a simple problem in the heart and he will undergo tests and he had come to London for this purpose." The spokesman added " he will get rest for several days and then we will find out what his medical team will decide," stressing that al-Seistani was not admitted to hospital yesterday and will not be admitted to it before the end of the week, at least.

A spokesman for the British foreign office said that al-Seistani is in a " private " visit. He said that the Shiite clergy will not meet with any British official during the visit.

Al-Seisatani stopped for three hours in Beirut which he had left to London on the board of one Middle East Airline company. At Beirut's airport, al-Seistani was welcomed by the speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri under tough security measures. The two men met at the airport but the speaker of the Lebanese parliament kept silence when he was asked about the meeting.
